How to Make a Huragok

Updated: Jan 16

It's been a little over a year since I made my first Huragok for my husband's birthday present. He's loved the Halo franchise since he was a kid, and Halo 3: ODST is his favorite Halo game. Huragok are adorable, so I felt like it was the perfect choice!

Here's what you'll need to make your own:

  • a 3.5 mm crochet hook (This if you're planning to use DK weight yarn. If you're not, check the yarn label's recommended size and then size down by at least one size. This helps reduce gaps between stitches that stuffing could escape from!)

  • less than one skein of purple yarn (approx. 36 grams)

  • less than one skein of blue yarn (approx. 13 grams)

  • scrap amounts of pink eyelash novelty yarn or a similar yarn (approx. 4 grams)

  • (4) 12mm safety eyes

  • (2) 16mm safety eyes

  • stuffing

  • tapestry needle for sewing pieces together

  • scissors

  • stitch marker (optional but recommended)

If you plan on making more than one Huragok or are using a different weight of yarn than DK, it might be helpful to keep in mind that you need about double the amount of purple yarn compared to the blue yarn. When I make my Huragok, I use Cygnet DK in Jam and Lupin, along with King Cole Moments DK in Magenta Pink. I've also used Stylecraft Highland Heathers DK in Thistle when I've run out of the Jam yarn before, and it works just as well. I've also gotten away with using worsted weight yarn for the gas orbs while still using DK for the body without it looking too weird.

The final product, when using DK yarn like I did, measures about 7 inches tall when sitting. I've seen lots of variations of the Huragok using different yarn. All of them have turned out great! Feel free to use whatever yarn you'd like, but just know the final size might be a bit different if you do.

I use US crochet terms in this pattern. Here are the abbreviations you'll need to know to make your Huragok: ch chain stitch

sc single crochet

hdc half double crochet

inc increase dec decrease

FO fasten off

Everything is worked in the round unless otherwise specified. To begin most pieces, I like to use the method of chaining 2 and then working into the first chain I made instead of making a magic ring. Magic rings work just as well if that's you're preferred method for starting out.

Head and Body (make 1)

Using blue yarn:

(1) ch 2, sc 4 into 2nd ch from hook [4]

(2) 4 [inc] [8]

(3) 4 [sc, inc] [12]

(4) [sc 2, inc] [16]

(5) 4 [sc 3, inc] [20]

(6) 4 [sc 4, inc] [24]

(7)- (14) sc 24 (8 rounds total) [24, 192 total]

(15) 4 [sc 4, dec] [20]

This is where the eyes get added, three on each side of the head with the largest in the middle. I usually place the first eye 3-4 rounds in from the beginning, place the largest eye 2-3 rounds away from it, then the last eye goes another 2-3 rounds from there which should be a few rounds from the end of the piece as it currently is. Flattening the head can help out a lot with getting the placement correct as you can better see if things are lining up. Stuff as you go after placing the eyes, keeping a small portion of the neck unstuffed so that the head falls forward when the Huragok is sitting.

(16) 4 [sc 3, dec] [16]

(17) - (33) sc 16 (17 rounds total) [16, 272 total]

(34) 4 [sc 2, dec] [12]

(35) 4 [sc, dec] [8]

(36) - (39) sc 8 (4 rounds total) [8, 32 total]

(40) 4 dec [4]

(41) - (44) sc 4 (4 rounds total) [4, 16 total]

(45) 2 dec [2]

(46) FO, leaving a small yarn tail to attach to the body.

Curl the narrower part of the tail back in on itself. Using the yarn tail, secure the curled tail to the main part of the body.

Gas orbs (make at least 8)

Using purple yarn:

(1) ch 2, sc 4 into 2nd ch from hook [4]

(2) 4 [inc] [8]

(3) 4 [sc, inc] [12]

(4) 4 [sc 2, inc] [16]

(5) 4 [sc 3, inc] [20]

(6) sc 2, inc, 3 [sc 4, inc], sc 2 [24]

(7)-(8) sc 24 (2 rounds total) [24, 48 total]

(9) sc 2, dec, 3 [sc 4, dec], sc 2 [20]

(10) 4 [sc 3, dec] [16]

(11) 4 [sc 2, dec] [12]

(12) 4 [sc, dec] [8]

(13) 4 dec and FO [4]

Assembly note: I find it easiest to tuck in the remaining yarn tails and sew all the orbs together using a configuration similar to the one shown here before adding the remaining two on top:

When sewing them together, think of it like stringing beads together. Alternatively, you could leave longer tails and sew the orbs together as you go using their yarn tails to attach them to each other. You may also find it easier to make a base to sew the orbs onto instead of sewing the orbs directly together. The instructions for this option base piece are as follows:

(1) ch 17

(2) sc 16, ch 1, sc 16 along bottom side of stitches, ch 1

(3) - (5) sc around, ch 1

(6) FO

Ultimately, how you combine the orbs is a matter of preference based on what you think looks best and what will be easiest for you to accomplish. You may find that you would like your Huragok to have more orbs, and that's okay! Arranging them as I have illustrated helps the Huragok to be able to sit up, but sometimes I need to add an extra one to make sure it's actually balancing properly. During the assembly process, it's okay to sew individual orbs on where you need them if you decide you need to add more to balance things out or for aesthetic purposes.

Frill (make 1)

Using purple yarn:

(1) ch 40 and join your last stitch to the first stitch you made using a ss (don't stress about it twisting as I find the twisting adds to the look) [40]

(2)-(3) sc 40 [40, 80 total]

(4) hdc 3 in each stitch around [120]

(5) FO

Tentacle (make 4)

Using blue yarn:

(1) ch 31 [31]

(2) starting in the second ch from the hook, sc 30 [30]

(3) FO with small tail

Cilia (make 4)

Using pink novelty yarn:

(1) ch 8 and join into a circle using a ss [8]

(2) hdc 10 into the circle (you may need to increase the number of hdc depending on yarn, you want to do as many as necessary to make the circle full and fluffy) [10]

(3) FO and attach to the end of a tentacle using the two tails remaining

Tendrils (make 2)

Using blue yarn:

(1) ch 11 [11]

(2) starting in the second ch from the hook, sc 10 [10]

(3) FO

Assembly

  1. Sew the gas orbs together (see assembly note under gas orb instructions)

  2. Sew the gas orb bundle to the back of the Huragok's head and body piece. It's okay if this part is a little messy because the frill should cover any mistakes where the orbs connect to the body.

  3. If you want your Huragok to be able to sit up on its own, now is the time to check to see if its properly balanced. If more gas orbs are necessary, make them now and attach them wherever needed.

  4. Take the frill and slide it onto the Huragok's head and body piece so it's lined up with where the gas orbs are attached to the body. Sew the frill on at this joining line, making sure to connect it to both the body and orbs. Be careful that no blue is showing between your stitches.

  5. Turn the Huragok over and attach the tentacles and tendrils to its belly. The tendrils will go in the middle, with two tentacles to either side.

  6. Huragok complete!
